Our Judge for this years event was Dino GuarinoDino is a noted Pittsburgh artist and historian who truly enjoys nostalgia. Through his work, Dino delights in capturing the “heart” and “feel” of times long past.   This is easy to see in is newest work; "Eternal Summer", Follow me to Forbes Field, an original Oil on exhibit here at Jeff Edwards Gallery throughout the Holiday Season.  His early years were dedicated to studying ecclesiastic art at the Joseph Poli Art Studios of Pittsburgh.  Incorporating all types of Roman Catholic and Byzantine iconology, he designed and executed wall murals, Stations of the Cross, and also refurbished statuary throughout Western Pennsylvania.  Dino’s knowledge of iconology, coupled with his exactness for detail, resulted in his being commissioned to design hand-painted vestures for His Holiness Pope John Paul II during his second U.S. tour in 1987 in Columbia, South Carolina.

With a background centered in and around Pittsburgh, it should come as no surprise that Dino is also a sports enthusiast.  And this enthusiasm has inspired many of his works.  In 1984, he conducted his first exhibit in cooperation with the National Football League and the Pittsburgh Steelers.  In April of 1989, Dino was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Pirates to paint a series of sport illustrations, which appeared regularly in the Pittsburgh Pirate programs.  The Pittsburgh Pirates granted another commission, Dino’s artwork adorned the 2000 Pittsburgh Pirate Season Tickets, the final season at Three Rivers Stadium.  Dino’s first print, “The Hit That Closed Down the Town”, (Mazeroski’s 1960 World Series homerun) has sold out.  In 1991 Dino started publishing his own works through Guarino Gallery.  His lithograph entitled simply “Roberto”, an oil rendering of the late great Pirate superstar, sold out within one year, as well as his Mario Lemieux edition. Other limited edition prints by Dino Guarino are available at art galleries throughout the Tri-State area.  Dino’s ability to blend artistry and history offers a fresh look to the American sports scene.  As stated before, Dino has this way of capturing the "heart" and "feel" of times long past and this feeling has never been more prevalent than in his latest work:   Take a look and judge for yourself.

I Fly Like Paper
Oil Paintings by Joshua Hogan
- at the Jeff Edwards Gallery -

Joshua Hogan's paintings are a succession of adding and taking away. Oil paint, along with pastel and charcoal, allows him this flexibility. He can manipulate or remove paint, while still leaving a hint of the mark behind. In his more recent work, Hogan has added gold and bronze leaf to the canvas surface. These new works also introduce the bold use of color. A deeper progression from previous work, his paintings continue to explore the pull of intangible phantoms that challenge his ambition as an artist. Hogan's paintings appear in various public collections including; PNC Corporate Offices and The Greater Latrobe Conservation Trust.

In addition to exhibiting his own abstract paintings regionally and nationally, Hogan is the co-owner of Box Heart Gallery, a contemporary art and fine craft gallery that provides custom framing and other artistic services. Hogan is a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Union, Local 489 Studio Mechanics and works as a scenic artist within the entertainment industry. Most recently, he has worked on productions such as; The Avengers (feature film), Super Eight (feature film), and I Am Number Four (feature film). He is also manager of logistics and installation for Mox Box Consulting and has mounted various public art exhibitions including; Urbanic 2: Catalyzing a Regional Economic Renaissance at the Pittsburgh International Airport for the Temporary Exhibit G20.

Opening Reception:

We Must Never Forget!

Will we remember the way life was, the way it used to be
The way children frolicked about playing happy and carefree
Will we remember the way spring was, blooming wildly with flowers
The way we'd jump and play in puddles following its rain showers

The way the summer sun beat down on our backs, sweat glistening on our skin
The way we retreated into the shade as our faces were cooled by the blowing wind
The way the fall days grew increasingly cooler, leaves falling to the ground
The way the leaves changed their colors becoming more and more brown

The way the winter snow fell lightly to the ground leaving thick blankets of white lace
The way it looked so calm and peaceful like a picture of heaven's grace
Will we remember the way life was before freedom was attacked
For on that fatal day, 9-11, there was a grave impact

Will we remember what happened that day when so many lost their lives
The way life seemed it wouldn't go on unable to survive
Will we remember those who perished, the innocent and the brave
The victims and the ones who aided and tried to help and save

Will we remember the tragedy when our country was assailed
The way our patriotism united us as one so together we prevailed
We will remember all of this, everyone across our nation's land

We will remember what our country represents and the words "United We Stand, God Bless America.”
